Let me start by stating facts about the Influenza virus and how it works. Influenza virus is a RNA based virus. It has many types and subtypes, the fascinating thing about this virus is that it comes in different shapes and sometimes changes shapes and coding so it can get into our bodies worry free. This virus works on injecting its RNA inside the cells, thus infecting them and causing the disease we call Flu.
I will use simple words to explain how the vaccination is made and how it works on our system. The vaccine for Flu isn’t an actual antibiotic or chemicals to get rid of the virus. Flu shots are actually Flu viruses injected into our bodies. Those viruses are sterile and they don’t cause harm on our body neither expressing its symptoms. However, it aggregates our immune system. The immune system is an amazing “anti-virus” we have installed in our bodies. Injecting the virus inside the body is exactly like updating virus definitions in computer anti-virus software. The immunity will start to work against this virus making special antibodies to kill it. So by injecting the dead virus inside the body, it will have no side effects and it will update the immune system for a couple of years ahead to prevent the specific type of virus injected from infecting and expressing symptoms in the body.
Flu shots are specially made and targeted for children, elderly; people suffering from diabetes, heart diseases and asthma. Their immune system is the weakest compared to normal people which makes them more vulnerable to this virus. Whereas, healthy people won’t have a problem taking the shots or not because the immune system will work its way into creating a cure for Flu in a period of 1 to 3 days.
I explained almost all the basics needed to know about the virus and the vaccine (shot). Answering this question by yes is right scientifically but also to a certain extent. I have to remind you that this virus changes shapes and have many subtypes and types. The World Health Organization predicts the type of virus that will mostly be circulating each year and they issue the annual vaccination.
So, basically, the shot works, but not on all types at the same time. The good news are that when each shot is given and when the virus is cured in the body, the immune system keeps a history of how it killed the previous Flu viruses and will immdeiately attack when they encounter again. It is effective but to a certain extent because the mutation rate of the Influenza virus is high. This virus is one of the smartest viruses that exist.
