isnt that because the oral vaccine had a live polio virus in it?
Thats a negative ghost rider, the patent is not owned to this day, it hit the open market and was unpatenable (if thats a word) after that.
He chose not to patent it BEFORE it hit the market.

Jonas Salk testified before a Senate subcommittee saying that nearly all polio outbreaks since 1961 were caused by the oral polio vaccine.Also the vaccination actually created a new form of polio called Vaccine-associated paralytic poliomyelitis.
You can not patent something that is already in the market place, so once they started distributing it with out a patent, no one could own it.

The pharmaceutical company patented it and the investor, a politician, made an F’ing killing on this vaccine.
Bad business move for the inventor.
